Chapter Sixteen

When the bubble popped and the witches appeared in front of Dan like magic, he yelled and jumped back. He crouched down like he was under attack from all sides. The ogre still towered over both of the women, looking like he could crush them both in one blow. His face, however, gave away the fact that magic terrified him.

“Where did you come from?” he shouted.

“Why are you out of jail?” Maggie yelled. Her magical success had given her a moment of boldness that she wished she could take back as soon as it came out of her mouth. The ogre might be Dan deep down inside, but just in case there was some primeval part of him, Maggie didn’t want to make him angry.

“The police let me out,” Dan shrugged. “They said my size intimidated them but that I was still the main suspect so don’t go too far. I’m just headed back to help Evelyn out while I can.”

Maggie could see Esmeralda shaking her head in disbelief at the incompetence of the gnome police. It seemed that Officer Chris and Officer Wes were completely incompetent no matter how paranormal the town was.

“I do need your help though,” Dan said. “The officers made it sound like they were going to arrest me as soon as they can. But I really didn’t do it. I know all of those clues point to me and I look guilty. You have to help me because I swear I didn’t do it.”

Maggie glanced at Esmeralda. Her mother still believed wholeheartedly that Dan was not the murderer, but Maggie was still uncertain. Every time her gut told her that he was innocent, it felt like another clue popped up that pointed to him.

“Of course we can help you,” Esmeralda said. She threw a look at Maggie that Maggie knew meant to keep quiet. “Why don’t we walk with you to the tavern and see if we can listen to your side of the story again to spot anything we may have missed the first time.”

Maggie sighed. She had really been hoping to go home. Her mental capacity felt totally drained from everything she had been through so far in the day. It was getting to be dinner time now and she just wanted to be at home in her cozy bed trying to mentally unpack everything that had happened to her. She had found out she was a witch, discovered the new paranormal town, babysat werewolf pups, discovered a dead body, helped bring an ogre to jail and tried out her magical powers for the first time. She couldn’t pack much more in before her introverted self would explode.

Dan and Esmeralda were already walking toward the diner, Dan lumbering a bit slower so that Esmeralda and her walking stick could keep up with him. Maggie started to walk after them, purposely going a bit slower so that she didn’t have to be in on the clue-gathering that her mother was doing.

Maggie picked up bits and pieces of the conversation as they walked.
